Austrian National Holiday

In the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the birthday of the Emperor (Franz Joseph August 18) was the main national holiday.

In the 1st Republic, the day of the proclamation of the Republic (November 12) was a state but not a national Holiday.

In the Corporate State, May 1 was celebrated as the anniversary of the proclamation of the constitution, from 1934 May 1 was Labour Day, Youth´s Day and Mother´s Day.

In the National Socialist era, May 1 was celebrated as the "National Holiday of the German People".

In the 2nd Republic the "Day of the Austrian Flag" was celebrated for the first time on October 26, 1955 (the day of the Declaration of Neutrality), and subsequently every year on October 26.

In the Federal Legislation Act of October 26, 1965,

October 26 was declared a gesture of willingness to preserve the status of independence with direct reference to the Constitutional law on the neutrality of Austria;

since 1967 stores have been closed on National Holidays.

The Austrian Anthem                            Austrian flag         coat of arms

Land der Berge, Land am Strome,
Land der Aecker, Land der Dome,
Land der Haemmer zukunftsreich!
Heimat bist du grosser Soehne,
Volk begnadet fuer das Schoene,
Vielgeruehmtes Oesterreich,
Vielgeruehmtes Oesterreich!
Heiss umfehdet, wild umstritten,
Liegst dem Erdteil du inmitten
Einem starken Herzen gleich.
Hast seit fruehen Ahnentagen
Hoher Sendung Last getragen,
Vielgeprueftes Oesterreich,
Vielgeprueftes Oesterreich.
Mutig in die neuen Zeiten,
Frei und glaeubig sieh uns schreiten,
Arbeitsfroh und hoffnungsreich.
Einig lass in Bruederchoeren,
Vaterland, dir Treue schwoeren.
Vielgeliebtes Oesterreich,
Vielgeliebtes Oesterreich.
Land of mountains, land on the river,
Land of fields, land of cathedrals,
Land of hammers, with a rich future,
You are the home of great sons,
A nation blessed by its sense of beauty,
Highly praised Austria. (repeat)
Strongly feuded for, fiercely hard-fought for,
You are in the centre of the Continent
Like a strong heart,
You have borne since the earliest days
The burden of a high mission,
Much tried Austria. (repeat)
Watch us striding free and believing,
With courage, into new eras,
Working cheerfully and full of hope,
In fraternal chorus let us take in unity
The oath of allegiance to you, our country,
Much beloved Austria. (repeat)
